“Hello Mars! Here comes China!” Many Chinese netizens cheered online as the China National Space Administration unveiled its experiment simulating the process of the Mars probe on November 14th, 2019 in China’s Hebei province.
To carry out the Mars probe experiment which involves the lander’s hovering, avoiding obstacles and descending to land on Mars, the Peiyang Energy Science and Environmental Geotechnical Engineering team, led by Prof. Jiang Mingjing from Tianjin University, built the Martian surface simulation area for landing.
“Our team spent two years in building this simulation landing area including the basic site of surface imaging area, the basic working area, Martian surface features, the test bed for landing and the simulated laser and microwave situation on Mars.” Prof. Jiang explained. The team ensures a visual environment very close to the real geomorphology on Mars.
Highly approved by the China National Space Administration for their excellent work, the team received the title of “Outstanding Unit for Building the Martial Probe Landing Ground”. Prof. Jiang said that he and his team look forward to getting involved in China’s Mars probe planned to launch in 2020.
