Happy Lantern Festival

 Arts and Culture

It's a special day in the calendar,

for today is the Lantern Festival.

The first full-moon of the lunar New Year,

a time for family celebration far and near.

Appreciate the happy mood,

eat traditional “yuanxiao” or “tangyuan” food!

Lanterns look like thousands of flowers aglow,

like stars, as we peer from far below.

Young ones talking, taking chances,

hoping to meet each other’s glances.

Happy gatherings of family and friends,

fond memories of those who can’t attend.

When the moon rises over the willow trees,

some meet after dusk as best friends.

Others have to part,

for dreams are in their hearts.

Wishing when once you turn your head,

you find the other where lantern light is dimly shed.

Today is the beginning of March,

awaken to spring buds opening like hearts.

So open your hearts to a happy New Year,

open your hearts to those we hold dear.

Though the cold wind still blows,

new hope arises and new life follows.

It’s the best time of a year as spring comes calling,

it seems so long since the leaves were falling.

The last day of the winter vacation,

the last day of the Spring Festival celebration.

With a new hope and a new beginning,

laugh with the flowers blooming, to the birds gayly singing.
