Artificial intelligence changes the future. On May 16, the 2nd World Intelligence Congress Deans’ Forum was held on the Tianjin University (TJU) Peiyangyuan Campus., The deans of the TJU colleges of computer, software and intelligence colleges, as well as the top experts in the artificial intelligence field at home and abroad, gathered at Tianjin University to discuss the cultivation of artificial intelligence talent against the backdrop of emerging engineering education.
Zhao Zhonghua, vice chairman of the Tianjin Political Consultative Conference, and Zhong Denghua, president of Tianjin University, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony of Deans’ Forum. They also attended the inauguration ceremony of the Intelligence and Computing Division of Tianjin University with Professor Raj Reddy, academician of the American Academy of Engineering, academician of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, and laurate of the A.M Turing Award, and Bai Haili, deputy director of the Tianjin Education Commission, and Liu Suxia, deputy director of the Administrative Committee of the Haihe Education Park in Tianjin, and Gu Yunbiao, deputy director of the Tianjin Municipal Commission of Industry and Information Technology. and more than 300 experts and scholars in the field of artificial intelligence education and industry witnessed the establishment of the Intelligence and Computing Division of Tianjin University.
Zhong Denghua introduced the Tianjin University program of continuous artificial intelligence exploration in his speech. “The Report of the 19th National Congress of the CPC” points out that the Internet, big data, artificial intelligence and the real economy should be deeply integrated. The quality and quantity of talents determine the level and potential of artificial intelligence development. The New Generation of Artificial Intelligence Development Plan points out that currently, China’s artificial intelligence cutting-edge talents are far from meeting the demands. Relying on the platform of the World Intelligence Congress, Tianjin University holds a Deans’ Forum which hopes to set up a broad and in-depth exchange platform for deans, experts and scholars, to jointly cope with the opportunities and challenges in the construction of modern engineering, and to jointly explore ideas and measures for the cultivation of artificial intelligence professionals and to jointly share the frontier and hot spots in the field of artificial intelligence research. In his speech, Zhong Denghua stated “I believe that through communication, discussion and thought collision, we are sure to enlighten our minds, broaden our horizons, inspire our imagination and make due contributions to talents cultivation and discipline construction of artificial intelligence, the development of artificial intelligence technology and industry in the world and the progress of human civilization”.
“In recent years, in accordance with the important requirements of "Three Efforts" put forward by General Secretary Xi Jinping for Tianjin's work, Tianjin has actively planned the strategic layout of the intelligent science and technology industry and built the "Tianjin Intelligence Port" to serve the national strategy for the coordinated development of the Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei areas.Around this goal, Tianjin has deployed the General Action Plan to Accelerate the Development of the Intelligent Science and Technology Industry, and made clear efforts to vigorously develop the intelligent science and technology industry. The core of the development of artificial intelligence lies in human beings. Through the Deans’ Forum, we look forward to gathering the full strength of experts and scholars and wisdom consensus in exploring the professional construction related to artificial intelligence, and the mode of personnel training, and the cooperation production and learning field”, said Zhao Zhonghua in his speech.
According to the overall deployment of building a new generation of artificial intelligence in China and Tianjin, Tianjin University has established the Division of Intelligence and Computing. Tianjin University has a long-term accumulation of knowledge in cognitive computing, data science, intelligent technology and application, etc. and has made a large number of achievements in the field of cognitive computing, machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, computer vision, speech signal processing, etc. After more than 10 years of development and construction, the Tianjin University School of Computer Software has become highly popular and influential in China. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation, software engineering is an A-discipline, entering the top ten. The Group of Intelligence and Computing of Tianjin University has successively undertaken 973 projects related to artificial intelligence, key R & D projects, major national S&T programs, and key projects of the natural foundation. At present, more than 50 teachers, including distinguished, outstanding, and national youth, have been engaged in basic and applied research on artificial intelligence for a long time. Tianjin University will take the establishment of the Intelligence and Computing Division as an opportunity to build an intelligence and computing discipline with Chinese characteristics, world class and great character for the purpose of promoting the development of computer science and technology, software engineering, cyberspace security and artificial intelligence.
At the Deans’ Forum, Li Deyi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wang Sheng, chief strategy officer of Huawei Software Development Cloud, and Ma Jianhua, professor at Hosei University, Baidu campus brand director Li Xuanya and other artificial intelligence experts from various fields made a special report on talent training and the future development trends of artificial intelligence and other issues for in-depth exchanges.
