Tianjin University has announced the establishment of a brain-computer interface (BCI) undergraduate program, set to launch in the fall of 2024. This program is touted as the nation’s first, with students undergoing a second round of admission selection from the 2024 cohort.

BCI is a disruptive technology that transforms human-computer interaction models and is revolutionizing human production and lifestyle. It represents a critical frontier in global technological competition.

In response to the increasing demand for talents in BCI sector, Tianjin University set up the undergraduate program through the joint efforts of its College of Future Technology and the School of Medicine, and leveraged resources from various departments, including the Medical School, Electrical Automation and Information Engineering, Microelectronics, Intelligent Computing, Mathematics, and Materials Science and Engineering.

Top talents in brain-computer interfaces will form a comprehensive interdisciplinary research and teaching team that encompasses fundamental theories, device systems, and translational applications.

The program aims to create an integrated educational model featuring a radiating discipline layout, project-based curriculum, chain-style research training, and a school-enterprise collaborative teaching ecosystem. It intends to cultivate outstanding engineers and scientists capable of designing, manufacturing, and researching future bio-intelligent electronic interfaces, thereby leading advancements in brain-computer interaction technology and industrial development in the field of bio-information integration.
