On the evening of October 27th, the “Lives in TJU” special program was broadcasted on the popular show Day Day Up, on Hunan Satellite TV. About 30 teachers, students, alumni, and employees stepped on the stage of HNTV and gave a comprehensive presentation of TJU, including its long historical culture, first-class scientific achievements, professional management services and outstanding talent cultivation.
Food Competition between TJU and NUAA (Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics)
The show started with the competition of canteens from TJU and NUAA. “TJU’s canteens are not only about taste, but they also create memories.” Apart from tasty food, chefs presented and introduced preferential dishes, the Clean Your Plate Campaign and a series of measures to help students who have financial problems with affordable food.
Professor Wang Jie presented historical stories of TJU.
Professor Wang Jie, director of TJU’s Culture and History Research Institute of Higher Education, fully introduced the historical events of China’s first modern university, TJU. He exhibited the document signed by Emperor Guangxu for the founding of Peiyang University (Tianjin University’s original name), Peiyang University's entrance examination paper and first graduation photo of the university, giving the audience a fascinating lecture on how modern higher education originated in China.
Jay Siegel and his wife Kim Baldridge shared their experience in TJU.
Jay Siegel, dean of TJU’s School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology and School of Life Sciences, together with his wife Professor Kim Baldrige, shared their reasons for coming to China, their working and living experience at TJU, as well as the university's important scientific achievements.
Chen Yan, member of Young Overseas High-level Talents Introduction Plan and professor from TJU’s School of Mechanical Engineering, and Qi Juntong, deputy director of Institute of Robotics and Autonomous Systems and doctoral supervisor, respectively introduced their scientific research experience and orientations.

Yuan Guolin talked about his family's predestined relationship with TJU
Well-known alumni also shared their study days at TJU.
Yuan Guolin, former engineer of Water Conservancy Infrastructure General Bureau, MWR, former director of the Huaihe River Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources P.R.C., and also former deputy chief engineer of MWR graduated in 1962 from Tianjin University. In his family, eight members spanning three generations are all TJU graduates.
Liu Fanglei talked about the design philosophy with Chinese Characteristics.
Liu Fanglei, deputy chief designer from Beijing Institute of Architecture Design (BIAD) who graduated in 1994 from TJU’s School of Architecture also shared about his life at TJU. During the APEC Summit in Beijing in 2014, his design of the Yanqi Lake International Convention & Exhibition Center surprised the whole world. And for the following four years, he designed nearly all the international summits held in China. He is now the hottest architect for Chinese style design.
Several students from TJU also appeared on the TV program. Four doctoral students respectively introduced their research achievements which focused on vital national demands and international frontiers of science and technology, showing TJU students’ patriotism and scientific research responsibility. Doctoral students Wu Yi and Xie Zexiong gave an HNTV symbol which was cultivated by manually designed yeast genomes to the hosts as a gift.
This program of Day Day Up captured the earnest concern and strong resonance of TJU’s students, teachers, and alumni. As the prelude of the 11th World Alumni Conference, the recording of this program gained support from TJU Hunan Alumni Association and HNTV.
It is reported that this is a brave attempt for TJU to explore new ways to promote the university. It vividly provided the audience with a historical, romantic, and warm university image through a happy and relaxed atmosphere.
