Vale Professor Cao Chusheng

Academician Cao Chusheng was a Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at Tianjin University from 1999.

Professor Cao was a pioneer in China of modern dam design and a renowned expert in Hydraulic Engineering. He made outstanding contributions to the sustainable development of Chinese water conservancy and hydraulic power, with most of his life devoted to the theory and practice of modern dam design. He was in charge of the design of many major projects including: the Fuziling Reservoir Multi-Arch Dam, the first reinforced concrete high dam in China; the Yanguoxia Hydropower Station on the Yellow River, the first large-scale hydro project to generate electric power on the Yellow River; the Bikou Dam, the first large-scale rolled rock-fill dam in China; and the Panjiakou Water Control Project on the Luanhe River, the first large-scale hybrid pumped-storage power station in China. He was Chief Editor of “Hydraulic Structure”, a chapter in “Water Conservancy”, a volume of the China Encyclopaedia, and author of “Dam Technology in China”.

In 1948, he received his Bachelor’s degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University. After he graduated, he taught at Shanghai Jiaotong University.

In 1951, he participated in harnessing the Huaihe River.

In 1958, he worked in the Ministry of Water Resources of China.

In 1989, he was awarded the title of Engineering Design Master in China, and in 1999, elected an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
