The National College Youth Science Camp, jointly sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education and supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, aims to make full use of the resources of science and technology education in key universities in order to stimulate youths’ interests in science, cultivate their scientific spirit, their innovation consciousness as well as their practical abilities. In the year of 2017, Tianjin University Science Camp carried out a series of interesting popular science activities under the theme of “Fondness for Peiyang Crabapples, Dreams of National Science”. Students visited the State Key Laboratory, attended academic lectures, and conducted scientific and technological exchanges with undergraduate and graduate students.
In the morning of July 9, when the whole city was still sleeping, Tianjin University volunteers arrived at the station, being ready to meet the coming campers. All these students and teachers came from Beijing, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Shanxi, Gansu, Guangxi, Henan and other 19 provinces and cities across China, 242 people in total. Before the start of the camp, all the bottled water, washing powder, mattress and other necessities of life were prepared for the campers.
On July 10, the 2017 National College Youth Science Camp of Tianjin was held at Nankai University Tian Jiabing Concert Hall. Member of Chinese Academy Science Ouyang Ziyuan, Nankai University vice president Xu Jingjun, vice chairman of Tianjin Science and Technology Association Lu Shuangying, secretary of the Tianjin University Youth League Committee Lv Jing and leaders and guests from the sponsors were all present at the opening ceremony. At the beginning of the ceremony, Xu Jingjun delivered a welcome speech to attendees. Then, a teacher from Tianjin University, Qin Jun Nan, presented the magic of three-dimensional holographic projection technology which won great admiration from all teachers and students present. Finally, the China Association for Science and Technology Vice Chairman Lu Shuangying and director of the City Board of Education Secondary School Department Liu Wenli handed over the camp flag to campers, and the 2017 National College Youth Science Camp of Tianjin was officially declared open.
After the opening ceremony, campers attended the excellent report "Dream of the Moon Palace" given by academician Ouyang Ziyua. In the report, how to open the mysteries hidden behind the moon was unveiled by academician Ouyang, detailing the first lunar climax, the United States Apollo plan as well as the exploration and achievements of China's Chang'e program.
On July 11, the campers came to Weijin Road campus, and started their tour activities. At 9 o'clock in the Students’ activities Lecture Hall, teacher Han Baozhi of Tianjin University archives delivered a campus culture lecture with the theme "Strict and Real - the Constant Genetic Code of Tianjin University" to campers. Then, campers together with teachers went on to the school history museum being guided by volunteers, tasting Tianjin University’s rich history which stretched back more than 120 years.
Following the visit to Weijin Road campus, on July 12, campers came to the Peiyang campus laboratory, and continued to experience the charm of science and technology. At the Experiment Center of the TJU Math School, campers watched a number of physics experiments under the guidance of teachers. The gyroscope used in the experiment, the Stirling heat machine, the stroboscope, the hand-held battery and so on surprised the campers and the esoteric principles brought them into the wonderful world of physics.
In the afternoon of July 13, at the Tianjin University Wei Jin Road campus student activity center report hall, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wang Jingkang, one of the world's leading industrial crystallization experts who was named an advanced individual of the "Eighth Five-Year Plan", the National Women Inventor’s Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award as well as many other honorary awards, gave a lecture on “Pioneering and Innovative, Inspirational Talent”, greatly impressing campers.
On July 14, the last day in Peiyang campus, the campers and teachers came to visit the library. At 19:00 the closing ceremony and the evening party of the National College Youth Science Camp were held in Peiyang Park DaTong activity center lecture hall. After the roll call, the class flag show was performed. There were five class flags each designed with unique creativity, showing the style and spirit of each class. After a short break, programs wrote, directed and acted by campers themselves commenced the evening party. The chorus “Those Flowers” and drama “The Best of Us Teahouse”, stage play “Auld Lang Syne”, erhu solo “Ripe Grape”, dance “Paradise” and many others wowed the audience, who deeply marveled at the versatility of campers. Their fantastic performances made the entire audience break out into loud applause and provided a fitting end to an enlightening five days.
The evening party ended with a chorus, marking the ending of the National College Youth Science Camp.
