August 23 was the first day of enrollment for the 2017 freshmen. As usual, the Green Passage scheme was opened to subsidize those with financial difficulties. Providing this program enables students to defer paying fees and apply for student loans and temporary subsidization. No students should be excluded due to financial difficulties.
The Green Passage scheme aimed to award, subsidize, and provide loans and part-time jobs for students. In this way it aids both undergraduate and graduate freshmen. To subsidize students, there are many grants to choose from. For example, the Ma Renru Encouragement Foundation launched by Tianjin University alumnus Ma Renru, and the Zheng Dong Innovative Education Grant launched by alumnus Zheng Dong, among many others. There are thousands of part-time jobs available and students can do part- time work based on their interests. The University also offers in-kind subsidizations. Each student receives articles for daily use, including an air conditioner rental card, a SIM card, and a book, among other things.
On the day, freshmen were provided with a free “love package”. Among the many articles for daily use, there was included a washbasin, toothpaste, toothbrush, hanger and towel. Especially financially strapped students got free bedding. Each freshman also got a free book. In less than two hours, over 30 freshmen received their “love package”.
A graduate of Pharmaceutical Engineering surnamed Yang said: “The Green Passage scheme has relieved some of the economic pressure from my family. I will not have to worry as much about expenses, so I can study with an easy mind. ” Some parents said the Green Passage scheme allowed them to appreciate the subsidization policy of TJU, and they felt more relieved about their child's life and study at the university.
Tao Sen, a manager of the Student Subsidization Management Center of TJU, said the subsidization system of TJU was generous. Students can borrow for their fees and accommodation. They can apply for scholarships and subsidies or do part-time work to cover their living expenses. The tenet of TJU is that even without one penny, students can be sure they can enter the University and study. No one will be deprived of an education right because of financial difficulties.
